Mumbai, May 13 (NationPress) Actress Ishita Ganguly, who plays the role of Chamkili in the series Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurian, shared that this character is the darkest and most intricate one she has ever taken on.
Describing Chamkili, she stated: “Chamkili isn’t the first negative character I’ve been offered—I’ve received similar roles before, but I hesitated due to the industry's view on antagonists; there’s a risk of being typecast.”
She emphasized that Chamkili stands out.
“She’s like a coin—innocent and gentle in front of her husband and the villagers, yet cunning and threatening behind their backs. She’s the darkest and most intricate role I’ve taken on yet.”
Ishita expressed that immersing herself in this character has been both liberating and unsettling in the most positive way for her.
“Characters like her don’t seek validation; they provoke, disturb, and mirror uncomfortable truths. That’s the beauty of it. If people react strongly, even negatively, I feel I’m doing justice to her.”
“Just like Ranveer Singh embraced the role of Khilji in Padmaavat at the peak of his career, sometimes portraying the darkest characters can illuminate the path to a brighter future,” she added.
Reflecting on her journey, Ishita shared: “I grew up in a creative environment, surrounded by music—my mother is a ghazal singer, my brother plays the tabla, and my sister-in-law is a vocalist.”
While the performing arts were always part of her life, she initially didn’t see acting as her future.
“It was the grace, elegance, and strength of Madhuri Dixit and Rekha that first inspired me to dream. Over the years, this industry has profoundly shaped me—it has taught me persistence, resilience, and how to maintain grace even amid uncertainty and rejection. Every challenge has only made me stronger,” she stated.
With over ten years in the field, Ishita has advice for aspiring actors.
“To anyone dreaming of joining this industry, remember: success isn't solely about talent—it’s about remaining grounded during the highs and standing tall through the lows. You must be open to everything—the applause, silence, rejections, breakthroughs. Embrace it all with grace, humility, and a strong sense of self. That’s how you not only survive but truly thrive.”
As for the show, Chamkili now has a new ally named Tapasya, portrayed by Mansi Sharma. The show airs on Shemaroo Umang.
