Los Angeles, Nov 8 (NationPress) Actress Jennifer Lawrence has observed a distinct difference when collaborating with female directors.
In a discussion following a screening of her latest film Die My Love, she compared the experience to working with male filmmakers, noting that women directors tend to be less likely to over-direct. This insight came during a Q&A session with Vulture, as reported by femalefirst.co.uk.
The 35-year-old actress shared, “I have discovered a common thread among female directors: they tend to avoid the pitfall of over-directing. In instances where I’ve worked with male directors, there often seems to be a compulsion to feel like they are constantly directing the movie, which can become quite frustrating without actually achieving anything meaningful. When I think of an auteur, I often associate that with control and even a sense of neurosis!”
She highlighted the contrasting approach of Lynne Ramsay, stating, “Lynne was completely different.”
Lawrence elaborated, “She created a world for us and ensured we were aligned through music, dialogue, and the overall atmosphere on set.
“Then, she would gently step back, and from that discomfort, from her lessened visibility, something intriguing often emerged. She would then return and say, ‘That’s fantastic, let’s do it again.’”
“Or if we accidentally laughed, she’d say, ‘No, that was wonderful. I enjoyed that you laughed. Let’s do it again.’”
Ramsay’s psychological drama, adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel of the same name, depicts a woman portrayed by Lawrence who spirals into psychosis due to a loveless marriage following childbirth. The film features Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.
