Los Angeles, Feb 21 (NationPress) Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has partnered with female directors on no less than 19 occasions since 2017, exceeding her ambition to collaborate with a female filmmaker every 18 months following the #MeToo movement.
In an interview with Time, Kidman expressed that first-time female directors often bear the unnecessary burden of needing to "be perfect" in their initial films, stating, "It can be changed, but it can only be changed by actually being in the films of women," according to deadline.com.
Kidman reminisced about her decision made in 2017, recalling, "It was at a press conference in Cannes where I stated, 'From now on every 18 months, I will work with a female director.' I thought to myself, '18? That’s too long.' So, while the pledge was 18 months, I knew it would actually be every six months to a year in my mind."
She added, "The realization is that you’ve got to roll up your sleeves and do it."
"And that requires not being precious and just going, 'OK, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.' It’s about being consistent and determined to follow through. The other aspect of making that declaration is to do it publicly, hold yourself accountable, and ensure it gets done."
Kidman’s latest collaboration was with writer-director Halina Reijn on last year's erotic thriller Babygirl, in addition to roles in Vicky Jensen and Jorge Blanco’s Spellbound (2024), Karyn Kusama’s Destroyer (2018), and Mimi Cave’s forthcoming thriller Holland, which will premiere next month at SXSW.
During the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, where she first made her commitment, Kidman stated: "I’m at a stage in my life where I can support female directors repeatedly. It’s a very intentional choice."
"I won’t go two or three years without working with a woman. I will actively seek them out and continue to do so because I believe that is crucial at this time."
