Mumbai, Dec 8 (NationPress) Following the announcement of streaming powerhouse Netflix acquiring Warner Bros., including its film and TV studios as well as its gaming division, renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur raised an important question regarding the lack of focus on the individual consumer in this discourse.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Shekhar expressed that while industry debates revolve around corporate strategies, profitability, and long-term forecasts, they are based on a flawed premise—namely, that large companies can accurately predict or influence the viewing choices of individuals.
Shekhar stated: “With the upcoming acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix.... the spotlight is on corporate strategies, profitability, and assumptions about consumer preferences…”
“It appears as if a vast collection of historical IP, paired with current technological delivery capabilities, is the future.... but most of these assumptions are incorrect. Why? Because a consumer is an individual and makes personal choices, and the belief that corporations can predict or even guide these choices at scale is fundamentally misguided…”
He emphasized that this misconception is even more pronounced today, especially with the swift advancement of AI, which he described as “the most democratic technology we have witnessed in a long time.”
“Even more so with the rise of AI. For AI is the most democratic technology we've seen for a while, primarily because it empowers each individual with the ability to make choices and exert that personal power… AI will enable individuals to influence the collective.”
According to Shekhar, who has received accolades such as a BAFTA Award, a National Film Award, and a nomination for a Golden Globe Award, AI will ultimately dismantle the traditional notion that scale is advantageous.
“Thus, AI will be anti-size, or against the notion that consumers can be coerced into making choices that align with corporate boardroom decisions…”
The filmmaker noted that AI will “facilitate the creation of highly sophisticated content by individuals at significantly lower costs than corporations can manage, enabling direct sharing among other individuals.”
“Whether through YouTube or other emerging platforms…. AI will shift the balance in the battle between the democracy of individual content creation and the gatekeepers of content, in favor of the individual.”
Highlighting the success of TikTok, which reached a near-billion-dollar valuation before Hollywood recognized its significance, he noted that micro-dramas and budget-friendly formats are becoming global phenomena. With AI further reducing entry barriers, he believes the conventional gatekeepers of content are in “serious trouble.”
“Remember that TikTok achieved nearly a billion-dollar valuation even before Hollywood caught on…. and now micro-dramas are gaining immense popularity, which can be produced at incredibly low costs. AI has lowered the barrier to what was once high-budget content to such an extent that the gatekeepers of content are in serious trouble.”
“…and by the way, nearly 80 percent of the world's population (thus current and future potential consumers) lies beyond the reach of the new giants, and the emerging content/power of delivery will originate from within this 80 percent.”
