Chennai, Dec 10 (NationPress) The city of Chennai is gearing up for the unveiling of the second phase of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam this Friday, as the government of Tamil Nadu advances its prominent women’s welfare program.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is scheduled to officially inaugurate this extended phase during a significant public gathering at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.
This launch comes on the heels of a recent declaration by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding the expansion of this well-received cash assistance scheme to encompass a greater number of beneficiaries.
To celebrate this milestone, the State government is hosting a special event titled 'Vellum Thamizh Pengal' (Victorious Tamil Women), which aims to highlight Tamil Nadu’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment through various welfare measures.
An official announcement stated that the event will see the involvement of several distinguished figures, including renowned Gandhian and social activist Krishnammal Jagannathan, along with Paralympics medalist Thulasimathi Murugesan.
Women beneficiaries from all over the State will also participate, sharing their inspiring stories about how government initiatives have positively impacted their lives.
The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam was first introduced by the Chief Minister during a session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on March 27, 2023.
This scheme offers direct monthly financial support of Rs 1,000 to qualifying women heads of families, aiming to secure basic income and enhance household stability.
In its initial phase, a total of 1,13,75,492 beneficiaries were registered across the State, establishing it as one of the largest women-centric income support initiatives in the nation.
The event on December 12 will also showcase the influence of various other key welfare programs focused on women and marginalized communities. These include Vidiyal Payanam (complimentary bus travel for women), Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (home healthcare services), Nalam Kakkum Stalin health initiative, Thozhi Viduthigal (working women's hostels), and Nannilam Magalir Nilavudamai Thittam, among others.
Officials noted that the enhanced phase of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam is anticipated to include a larger number of eligible women, further fortifying the State’s social security framework.
They emphasized that this program reflects the government’s ongoing dedication to the economic inclusion, dignity, and empowerment of women as a fundamental aspect of its governance strategy.
