A Mumbai She Never Knew

Despite being born and raised in Mumbai and having travelled extensively across India, Kareena said the journey of making Daayra revealed an entirely unfamiliar geography. 'I thought I knew most of the city and the country through my life's journey so far. But the journey of Daayra took me to unseen and unvisited places. And that's just the geography,' she said.

The actress added that the film pushed her well beyond physical locations, expanding her social awareness and challenging her understanding of identity and society.

The Film's Core Idea: Duality Over Binary

Drawing on her academic background in Sociology, Kareena framed Daayra as a story that dismantles binary thinking. 'Our life and our society is not binary. It's not just black and white. There is a spectrum of grey that we exist in,' she said, connecting the film's philosophy to her earlier work with Gulzar on films including Talvar, Raazi, Chhapaak, and Sam Bahadur.

She described Daayra as not merely exploring that grey, but invading and attempting to dismantle it — while simultaneously being built entirely on duality. 'At its core Daayra is only about duality. And this duality is entrenched through the two main protagonists of the film,' she said.

The Characters and the Casting

Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, a character she describes as 'stoic, unreadable' — one who 'cracks open situations and people with a smile.' Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays DCP Raman Kumar, whom she calls 'the hinge to Kareena's Ajooni,' a man 'seething with a caged rage' who 'almost never smiles.'

She called the pairing of two leading actors from the Hindi and Malayalam film industries a casting opportunity that was 'a dream come true.' The film, she noted, is inspired by not one but several true events that have occurred across India, and its story is deliberately not anchored to any single city or state.
