Veteran actor Anupam Kher has shared the story of how he landed the iconic role of Dr. Michael Dang in director Subhash Ghai's blockbuster 'Karma', as the film completed 40 years on Saturday, 8 August. Kher marked the milestone with a video on social media, offering a candid look at the chance encounter that launched one of Hindi cinema's most memorable villains.

The Party That Changed Everything

Kher recalled that his casting came about through a brief, unplanned meeting with Ghai at a social gathering. 'I had met Subhash Ghai at a party. He was leaving the party, and I was going inside. It was a long walk. I met him. He saw me from top to bottom. I had not met him before that. He told me to come to his office,' Kher said in the video.

The following day, when Kher arrived at Ghai's office, the director wasted no time: he told the actor he would be playing the main villain in his next film. For a then-emerging actor still building his reputation, the offer was both unexpected and transformative.

A Star-Studded Cast That Left Kher Speechless

Kher admitted he asked Ghai what he described as a 'silly question' — wanting to know who else was in the film. The answer left him elated. Ghai revealed the cast included Dilip Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon, and Nootanji.

Reflecting on the film's impact, Kher said, 'Around 40 years ago, on this very day, a film of mine was released, which changed my category from a 'good actor' to a 'star'. The name of the film was 'Karma', by Subhash Ghai.' The actor also recalled that a promotional poster featuring him alongside Dilip Kumar was displayed near the Mahim Church area of Mumbai — a detail that evidently stayed with him across four decades.

Kher closed his tribute video by recreating Dr. Dang's most celebrated monologue from the film: 'Dr. Dang jung karta hai. Aaj pehli baar Dr. Dang ko thappad pada hai. Suna aapne is thappad ki aawaaz? Ab jab tak zinda rahoge, is thappad ki aawaaz sunte rahoge. Main is thappad ko kabhi nahi bhoolunga.'
