Why Did Lokesh Kanakaraj Decide Against Directing the Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan Film?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 26 (NationPress) In an effort to address the backlash he faced for stepping back from directing the highly anticipated film starring Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, renowned director Lokesh Kanakaraj shared his reasoning on Monday.
Lokesh explained to the press, "I want to clarify certain aspects regarding the Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan project, as I have received a lot of criticism for my choice. I first met both superstars during the release of Coolie, where they expressed their desire to collaborate on a film like this."
"It was a significant opportunity for me, and I felt honored that these two legends, who hadn't worked together in 46 years, wanted me to direct the film. However, at that time, I was committed to directing Kaithi 2. I informed the production team that I needed to complete that project first, as I wasn't sure I'd get a chance like this again," he elaborated.
Lokesh further detailed, "I dedicated one-and-a-half months to writing the script for the Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan film, striving to create a story that honored both icons. Once I finished, I presented the script to both stars individually, and they were both enthusiastic about the storyline."
However, he noted that both actors had been consistently involved in action films. "Rajinikanth has recently starred in action-packed films right up to Jailer 2, while Kamal's next project, directed by stunt choreographers Anbarivu, is also action-heavy. They expressed concerns about whether they should continue making action films without a break. They were leaning towards a lighter film, which I don't have experience in. I communicated this to them and decided to exit the project," he stated.
Lokesh also expressed gratitude to the media and the public for their overwhelming support of his film Coolie. "I appreciate everyone for supporting Coolie, which ran for 35 days despite various criticisms. Sun Pictures informed me that it was a profitable venture. I am thankful to the media and public for their backing. I have learned many lessons from this experience, which I aim to apply to my future projects," he concluded.
