Director Rajkumar Periasamy has assured fans that Mammootty's entry in the upcoming Tamil action film 'Om' — also titled 'Om Chapter 1: Udhiram The Bloodwood' — will be well worth the wait, days after the Malayalam superstar was conferred the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honours. The film stars both Dhanush and Mammootty in lead roles and is currently in production.

Director's congratulatory post and the tease

Taking to social media, Periasamy congratulated Mammootty on receiving the Padma Bhushan from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, while simultaneously building anticipation for the film. In his post, the director wrote: 'Hearty Congratulations to our very own @mammukka on being conferred upon with The Prestigious #PadmaBhushan award for his exceptional contribution to the Indian Cinema for more than five decades. Now wait for Ikka's entry from #OM. It will be worth all your wait!'

Mammootty's character and production update

Periasamy had earlier revealed at the film's title teaser launch event that Mammootty plays a character named Karthikeyan in 'Om'. At the time of the event, the director confirmed that between 60 to 65 per cent of filming had been completed. He described the project as 'a special journey for everybody associated with it,' adding that the film was 'shaping up well.'

Story, cast, and release date

The title teaser released by the makers revealed that the story centres on those who cut red sanders — a protected and highly valuable timber — for a living. Dhanush himself plays a woodcutter who comes to the rescue of workers held at gunpoint by police. The film is scheduled to release on 16 October this year.

Alongside Dhanush and Mammootty, the film features Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela as the female leads. Music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, with cinematography by Ezhil Arasu, editing by Kalaivanan R, and costumes by Kavya Sriram.

Biggest Dhanush film to date

Wunderbar Films head Sreyas disclosed at the teaser launch that 'Om' would be the biggest Dhanush film in terms of budget. He also noted the film would bring back the 'mass vintage Dhanush' that fans have long wanted to see on screen — a pointed signal that the makers are betting on Dhanush's commercial action persona rather than an arthouse pivot.

Sequel potential

The tagline 'Chapter 1' has sparked speculation about a franchise. However, Periasamy clarified that the first film would be a complete, self-contained story. Whether a sequel materialises will likely depend on the film's box-office performance in October.
