Mumbai, April 4 (NationPress) Did you know that it was the legendary actress Nanda who motivated the late Manoj Kumar to embark on a journey into writing and directing?
Manoj Kumar and Nanda collaborated on three films - 'Bedaag', 'Gumnaam', and 'Shor'.
Nanda's brother, Jayprakash Karnataki, who is also a director, shared a fascinating story from the filming of 'Bedaag'. During the shoot, Manoj Kumar was unhappy with a specific scene in the script, prompting him to rewrite it in his unique style. The first person he consulted about his revised scene was Nanda. She was so impressed with his version that she urged the director to include it in the film. Director R. Bhattacharya agreed, leading to the filming of Manoj Kumar’s rewritten scene.
Nanda played a crucial role in encouraging Manoj Kumar to write and instilled in him the belief that he could achieve success as a director. His confidence soared after penning the script for the film 'Shaheed', which led him to not only write but also direct 'Upkaar'.
Manoj Kumar’s wife, Shashi Goswami, often told Nanda that by uplifting her husband, she had effectively transformed him from an actor into a writer-director.
When Manoj Kumar began work on the film 'Shor', he initially approached Sharmila Tagore and Rakhi for a guest role, but both declined. Eventually, Nanda herself took on the guest role, contributing significantly to the film’s success, and she did so without expecting any payment.
In a tragic turn of events, on the day of Nanda's passing, her servant notified Manoj Kumar about her declining health. At that moment, he was at a medical check-up with his family doctor. He promptly canceled the check-up and dispatched the doctor to Nanda's residence in his vehicle. Upon examination, the doctor confirmed her demise.
In a poignant coincidence, Nanda's death anniversary is ten days prior to Manoj Kumar's on March 25.
The eminent actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away on Friday at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. His health had been declining since he was hospitalized on February 21.
