Mumbai, April 10 (NationPress) Action director Mohan Baggad has shared intriguing behind-the-scenes stories regarding the late legendary actor Manoj Kumar from the filming of their renowned movie 'Kranti'.
Baggad fondly recounted a humorous incident from the film's set. One of his most treasured memories occurred on the very first day of filming during a fight scene featuring Parveen Babi and Hema Malini. Reflecting on this unforgettable moment with Manoj, Mohan Baggad told IANS, “I still remember the first day of the film Kranti. There was a fight scene between Parveen Babi and Hema Malini. While we were explaining the scene to them, Manoj ji inadvertently switched to Punjabi while giving instructions. It was such a fun and light-hearted moment. Since neither actress understood, I had to clarify the entire shot to them again.”
The esteemed action director also elaborated on Manoj Kumar's unique working style while filming Kranti. “Manoj had his own signature approach. Regardless of whether the language was Bengali, Punjabi, English, or any other, he always communicated in Punjabi. I remember during one scene where Parveen Babi and Hema Malini were meant to engage in a sword fight.”
“So, Manoj directed in Punjabi: You’ll enter from this side, she’ll enter from that side, then you’ll raise the sword and strike... The issue was that neither actress understood his instructions. I was standing beside him, and one of them turned to me and asked, “What is your director saying?” I translated and explained. I told Manoj sir, if we want to finish the film properly, you’ll need to clarify things in Hindi. But that was his charm. That was Manoj’s style,” Mohan Baggad added.
The legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, affectionately known as 'Bharat Kumar' for his iconic patriotic roles, passed away on April 4 at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
He was laid to rest with full state honors in Mumbai on April 5.
Expressing his grief over the actor’s demise, Mohan Baggad stated, “I learned a great deal from him—not only about action but various other aspects as well. I also picked up editing skills from Manoj. When I learned of his passing, I was profoundly saddened. Yes, we had a bond that lasted over five decades. We collaborated on films like Purab Aur Paschim, Shor, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Kranti, Desh Premi, Clerk, and Deshbhakt—the list is extensive. We shared many laughs and often conversed in Punjabi. There was always a sense of camaraderie between us.”
