Kamal Haasan, a legend in Tamil cinema, remarked, “In today’s world, stories transcend all screens. They accompany the audience wherever they go. The viewer has become the platform, altering the dynamics between medium and message indefinitely. Stories do not belong to any particular screen; they resonate with people and travel with them.”
He elaborated, “This significant change makes JioHotstar's initiative incredibly impactful for Tamil Nadu. It not only showcases ambition but also opens up vast opportunities. Every Tamil creator, producer, and storyteller now has the ability to reach every Indian, on any screen, every single day. Today, what was once considered regional is emerging as the new national narrative, and ethnic stories are turning into international phenomena.”
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin expressed, “I am thrilled to announce this collaboration with JioHotstar. Chennai's rich heritage in art and culture spans ages, and we also see productions from Telugu and Malayalam here. Art wields tremendous influence in both politics and society; it can inspire change and educate. The legacy of figures like Annadurai and Karunanidhi in Tamil cinema has been pivotal in societal transformations.”
“Content reigns supreme, and we have a long journey ahead. It’s crucial to understand that OTT is not a replacement for cinema, but rather an expansion of it. In today’s landscape, anyone can share a story and connect with a global audience. This partnership with JioHotstar is poised to create 1,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs. Our administration is devoted to fostering a robust economy alongside the film industry,” he added.
JioHotstar also disclosed its intentions to sign a Letter of Intent with the Tamil Nadu government, reinforcing a shared vision to enhance the state’s creative and production ecosystem.
Additionally, JioHotstar plans to invest INR 4,000 crore over the next five years to stimulate the region’s creative economy.
