Filmmaker and fashion designer Vikram Phadnis marked the first death anniversary of his late father on 12 August with a deeply personal tribute on social media, revealing that his father's singular wish had been to watch him direct his first Hindi film — a dream that came true, albeit without him.

A Year of Loss and Milestones

Phadnis shared a series of photographs alongside an emotional note, recounting the evening his father was taken to hospital and never returned home. Despite a year of professional achievements and continued work, he wrote that a part of him still feels incomplete.

In his own words: '12th August.... One year ago today, I lost my father. He went to the hospital that evening... and somehow, never came back home. I still remember that evening. I remember the anxiety, the fear, the feeling that something was terribly wrong.'

He added: 'A year has passed. I've grown older. I've celebrated milestones in 2025, worked harder, kept going... but there is still a part of me that feels incomplete.'

His Father's Unfulfilled Wish

At the heart of Phadnis's tribute was a poignant detail: his father had believed in his dream of making a Hindi film long before Phadnis himself knew how to realise it. 'My father had only one wish... to see me make my first Hindi film. He believed in this dream before I even knew how to make it happen. And life took him away before he could see it,' he wrote.

The timing adds a bittersweet dimension — on the very anniversary of his father's passing, Phadnis was boarding a flight to Melbourne for the world premiere of that film. 'Today, as I fly to Melbourne for the World Premiere of my first Hindi film, my heart is filled with emotions I can't quite put into words. I'm excited. I'm grateful. But more than anything... I wish my father was here,' he said.

Dedicated to His Parents

Phadnis dedicated the film to his mother, describing her as the person who held him together through the difficult stretches of the journey. Yet he made clear his father's presence ran through every frame. 'This film is for my mother. But this moment... is for my father. His dream. My journey. Our film. I wish you were here, daddy,' he wrote.

About the Film and Phadnis's Career

The film in question is Pal Bhar Ke Liye, starring Saiyami Kher, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Viineet Kumar Siingh, and Ishwak Singh. It is set to have its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026.

Phadnis is a veteran of Hindi cinema as a costume designer, with credits spanning Biwi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, Salaam-e-Ishq, Namastey London, Golmaal Returns, and Dulha Mil Gaya. He made his directorial debut with the Marathi film Hrudayantar in 2017, starring Subodh Bhave and Mukta Barve, and followed it with Smile Please in 2019. Pal Bhar Ke Liye marks his first foray into Hindi-language direction.
