Pritish Nandy, Renowned Indian Director, Passes Away; Anupam Kher Shares the News

Mumbai, Jan 8 (NationPress) The Indian journalist and filmmaker Pritish Nandy has sadly passed away at his home in Mumbai following a cardiac arrest. This heartbreaking news was revealed by the esteemed actor Anupam Kher.

In a heartfelt post on X, Anupam shared a tribute to the late director, including two black-and-white photographs of him taken years apart. Anupam expressed his sorrow, stating, "Deeply deeply saddened and shocked to know about the demise of one of my dearest and closest friends #PritishNandy! An incredible poet, writer, filmmaker, and a courageous and distinctive editor/journalist. He was my pillar of support and a profound source of strength during my early days in Mumbai.”

He continued, “We had many shared interests. He was one of the most fearless individuals I have ever known—always larger than life. I learned countless lessons from him. We hadn’t met frequently in recent times, but there was a period when we were inseparable! I will always cherish the moment he surprised me by featuring me on the cover of a magazine, particularly #TheIllustratedWeekly. He embodied the true essence of यारों का यार! I will miss you and the moments we shared, my friend. Rest in peace. #HeartBroken.”

Pritish Nandy was born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, into a Bengali family, and he identified as an agnostic.

A man of many talents, he was also a painter, poet, and producer. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing Maharashtra, and was elected as part of the then-united Shiv Sena.

He authored forty poetry collections in English and translated works from Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi into English, including a new interpretation of the Isha Upanishad. Additionally, he wrote stories, non-fiction, and three translations of classical love poetry from Sanskrit.

In his artistic career, he held six exhibitions showcasing his paintings and calligraphy.
