Producer of ‘Black Warrant’ Affirms Series Does Not Glorify Violence Despite Its Grim Setting

Mumbai, Jan 13 (NationPress) Sameer Nair, the producer of the newly launched streaming series ‘Black Warrant’, has emphasized that the series presents a narrative set amidst violence without glorifying it.
The series, which is rooted in the 1980s, draws inspiration from real-life events and is a dramatized version of the book ‘Black Warrant: Confessions Of A Tihar Jailer’ authored by Sunil Gupta, a former superintendent of Tihar Jail, and journalist Sunetra Choudhury.
While discussing the show, Sameer Nair, MD of Applause Entertainment, stated, “‘Black Warrant’ narrates a human tale against a violent backdrop without romanticizing it. Our focus is on a human story; violence is merely a facet of that narrative. Often, creators fall into the trap of overusing certain tropes. However, when you view the series, it’s fundamentally a narrative about real individuals navigating their lives; they just happen to be incarcerated.”
He continued, “Given the setting of Tihar Jail, violence is an inevitable element, yet it is not the central theme of the narrative. The essence of the story revolves around the era... It also provides insights into India’s past. Therefore, it is not crafted to shock or provoke; rather, it is a story.”
The plot revolves around Gupta and his two trusted jailers as they maneuver through the turbulent environment of Tihar Jail, dealing with infamous inmates and the omnipresent politics that characterize the prison system. Although the premise hints at a violent atmosphere, the narrative’s emphasis remains on the human experiences at its center, utilizing a contemporary storytelling approach.
This series not only captivates its audience but also ignites significant discussions surrounding systemic issues and the socio-political dynamics of India during the 1980s.
Produced by Applause Entertainment, ‘Black Warrant’ is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
