Television actor Ram Kapoor made a deeply personal and emotional disclosure on the reality show Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa, revealing that he helped his terminally ill father prepare for death — and that his mother and sister have not spoken to him since, a silence that has now stretched beyond five years. The confession came after the keyword 'Father' appeared on screen during the episode.

A Strained Father-Son Bond

Ram opened the conversation by acknowledging that he and his father had always been at odds. 'My father was a very rich, wealthy man. I wanted to live my life, and I separated, became an actor, and did not join his company,' he said. He described the relationship candidly: 'humare beech humesha chattis ka aakda tha' — there was always a strained relationship between them — while the rest of the family remained close to his father.

A Call That Changed Everything

The turning point came during the Covid pandemic, when his father's cancer returned. According to Ram, his father reached out through his wife Gautami, asking to speak with him. The two reconnected over the phone, and it was during these conversations that his father revealed he had decided he no longer wished to live. 'He was scared to take this step alone. For some reason, he felt he needed me,' Ram recalled.

His father then asked him directly: 'Can you help me in dying?' Ram described his initial shock — 'Obviously my reaction was same like anybody else. I'm like "What the … are you talking about?"' — but said his father ultimately convinced him that without support, he would die alone.

Holding His Hand Until the End

Ram shared that his father wished to spend his final days with him in the ICU, and had made two specific requests: that no one cry at his funeral, and that he be buried on the very day he passed away. Ram honoured both. 'Somehow I held his hand every day and allowed him to go,' he said.

The aftermath, however, was painful. His mother and sister, who were not part of this arrangement, cut off contact entirely. 'My mother and my sister still don't talk to me. It's been more than 5 years,' Ram said.

Ram's Perspective on Life and Death

Despite the family estrangement, Ram expressed no regret. 'I think it is one of the best things a child can do for his parent because everyone lives like a king, but my father died like a king,' he said. He added that the experience has left him personally unafraid of death, having seen it 'so close.'

The revelation has sparked widespread conversation around end-of-life choices, family grief, and the emotional burden carried by those who assist a loved one's final wish — a discussion rarely aired so openly in mainstream Indian entertainment.
