Mumbai, July 7 (NationPress) Actor Saanand Verma has discussed how Hema Malini’s legendary character Basanti from “Sholay” inspired his portrayal in the forthcoming film “Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan.”
He shared that he took cues from Malini's unforgettable performance as Basanti. Delving into his character and his preparation, Saanand revealed, “My character is named Shauki Lal—the name itself is quite quirky and fun. He’s a joyful, chatty driver who just can’t stop talking. He reminds you of Hema Malini’s iconic Basanti from Sholay—drives around and talks nonstop. His mouth is literally never shut.”
“He infuses humor, rhythm, and energy into the story and stands out as one of the highlights of the film. Initially, I envisioned him as someone who constantly chews gutkha. So, I prepared with that concept in mind. But once I was on set, director Santosh Singh suggested I deliver my lines without it. That worked much better, and we dropped the gutkha idea. Since this is a very natural character, heavy preparation wasn’t necessary. I’ve observed numerous real-life drivers—especially the talkative ones—and used that as inspiration.”
Saanand continued, “Having portrayed fast-talking characters like Saxena Ji from (Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai) for over 11 years, quick delivery comes naturally. Plus, I'm always keenly observing people. I’ve seen countless drivers—expressive, animated, and talkative. And of course, I’ve watched Sholay 15 times—Basanti was always a reference point! Even the driving scenes were filmed in the hills of Uttarakhand, with treacherous turns, but I’ve been driving for 22 years, so that aspect was enjoyable.”
Discussing his co-stars Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor in the upcoming film, he remarked, “Vikrant is a brilliant actor—deeply professional and incredibly focused. Working with him was a pleasure. Shanaya, in her debut, was a revelation. In one emotional scene, she cried even after the cut was called—that’s how immersed she was. She’s humble, dedicated, and has no star-kid attitude. Her upbringing is clearly reflected in her work ethic. She’s going to excel.”
“Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan” marks Shanaya Kapoor’s first acting role. Based on Ruskin Bond’s cherished short story “The Eyes Have It,” the film features Shanaya as a passionate theatre performer, while Vikrant Massey plays a visually impaired musician.
The romantic drama is set to release in theaters on July 11.
