Why Did Salim Khan Object to Fatwas Against Bollywood?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai Feb 22 (NationPress) In a previous interview with Lehrein TV, renowned screenwriter Salim Khan expressed his thoughts regarding the trend of issuing fatwas against filmmakers and those within the entertainment sector.
He raised an intriguing question about the rationale behind targeting only individuals connected to the film industry.
Salim Khan articulated, “Why is a fatwa directed solely at film creators and actors? Shouldn't it also encompass the audiences who watch these films?”
He further elaborated, “Since the inception of the film industry, producers have always strategically timed their releases, particularly around Eid. It’s often believed that Muslims refrain from watching films during Ramzan, yet when a film debuts on Eid, it frequently achieves remarkable success.”
He noted, “Such success isn’t coincidental. Occasionally, a film is completed months in advance and is intentionally scheduled for an Eid release, regardless of whether it's a ₹60 crore project or a ₹5 crore one, as initial week earnings during that time are deemed extraordinary.”
Challenging the selective criticism, Salim Khan remarked, “If Muslims contribute immensely to box office sales by watching films, why not issue a fatwa declaring any Muslim who views films as not being a true Muslim?”
He emphasized the economic realities of the entertainment sector, stating, “If audiences cease to support our films, our industry will inevitably collapse. There would be no necessity for a fatwa against us. The moment viewers stop attending theaters, our industry will grind to a halt.”
Currently, Salim Khan is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit due to respiratory issues.
