Mumbai, Oct 8 (NationPress) Producer Sandeep Singh has provided a detailed explanation in response to Madhur Bhandarkar’s assertion regarding the supposed 'unauthorized' usage of the legendary 'Chandni Bar' title.
Singh addressed the issues presented, offering his perspective on the highly publicized sequel. His production company, Legend Studios, issued an official statement to clarify the legal stance of the project.
Legend Studios asserted that it has secured all essential legal rights and approvals from the rightful intellectual property (IP) and trademark holders of the 2001 film “Chandni Bar.” The studio also released the official Government of India Trademark Registry certificate, confirming that the title is registered to the original producers, R. Mohan and the late Lata Mohan Iyer.
In a statement, co-producer Vishal Gurnani emphasized, “Sandeep Singh's Legend Studios has procured the Option Rights for the title from the Original Producers, who are also the holders of the Registered Trademark and IP for the original cult classic Chandni Bar (2001). We wish to clarify that no other banner has the legal right to produce this film. Our IP attorneys are addressing the relevant trade organizations and undertaking all necessary measures to uphold and safeguard our legal rights.”
“The official trademark certificate, which is publicly accessible, clearly indicates the registration of the CHANDNI BAR trademark (Application Number 1662053, in Class 41) with the proprietor being Lata Mohan Iyer (wife of R. Mohan). This evidence confirms that Legend Studios has moved forward only after securing title rights from the legal successors of the original producer, and not from Madhur Bhandarkar or any associated entity,” he elaborated.
Madhur Bhandarkar has lodged a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) against producer Sandeep Singh and director Ajay Bahl. Following this complaint, the association has instructed the filmmakers to halt the use of the title for their project. Released in 2001, “Chandni Bar” marked Bhandarkar’s impactful debut in Bollywood, featuring Tabu in the lead role.
The upcoming film, “Chandni Bar Returns,” directed by Ajay Bahl, is set for a global release on December 3, 2026.
