Saurabh Shukla: The Beauty of Love in Later Years
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 9 (NationPress) Acclaimed actor and filmmaker Saurabh Shukla asserts that love only matures with age, evolving rather than diminishing over the years.
His recent film, “Jab Khuli Kitaab”, tells the poignant tale of Gopal and Anusuya, an elderly couple whose decades-long marriage faces turmoil following a surprising revelation. As hidden truths come to light, the family encounters a mix of heartfelt and humorous emotions, delving into themes of love, companionship, forgiveness, and rediscovering each other.
In an interview with IANS, the 63-year-old actor shared that his film addresses the subject of romance and companionship in later life—a topic that remains underrepresented in mainstream Hindi cinema.
“While I was penning this script, well-meaning individuals questioned whether younger audiences would be interested in a narrative centered on older individuals. I had no reservations, thanks to the storytelling and character development,” he stated.
Saurabh elaborated that the film depicts an elderly pair who seem to be living a stable life until an emotional shift reignites their youthful essence.
“You observe this elderly couple leading what appears to be a perfect life. Despite life’s challenges, they are settled. Then, something disrupts their routine, creating waves that transform them back into children. They begin to bicker like kids again.”
As per Saurabh, while the characters may seem aged outwardly, their spirits remain youthful.
“They begin to articulate their feelings, and emotions surge unexpectedly. They are the most youthful elderly individuals, you could say. Hence, I questioned why younger audiences wouldn't connect with this narrative; it is about two young-looking older people,” he remarked.
The actor also pondered on how cinema often associates romance with youth, neglecting love in later stages of life.
“Indeed, we can't exist without love; it’s a constant in our lives. The expression of love evolves, and it tends to be far more physical in our youth due to heightened hormones,” he explained.
He added, “The intensity of youthful love, marked by physicality and excitement, is a particular type of love with which we typically resonate.”
Nonetheless, he emphasized that the core of love never fades.
“Yet, our capacity to love endures. It’s a beautiful feeling to wake up next to the one you cherish most in this world,” concluded Saurabh.
