Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, March 31 (NationPress) Renowned Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger took a nostalgic journey back to his formative years while being awarded an honorary doctorate from Ulster University in Northern Ireland.
The 78-year-old actor graced the stage in Belfast to receive this prestigious accolade, reminiscing about his first visit to the city 60 years prior during his early bodybuilding days, as reported by ‘People’ magazine.
In a lighthearted address regarding his inaugural trip to Belfast, Schwarzenegger shared that it marked one of his first public speaking experiences in English when he won a bodybuilding competition in 1966 and faced questions from the audience.
He recounted, “Many people mention, 'It must have been tough for you at first with the Irish accent,’ and I replied, 'I had no idea there was an accent,’ since I didn’t speak English back then. The only phrase I could muster was, 'I no speak English’.”
According to ‘People’, he remembered the event's host commending him for his courage to speak publicly, leading to a standing ovation after he shared a few words with the audience.
Schwarzenegger expressed, “Everyone leaped to their feet and applauded enthusiastically. Then (the host) encouraged me to say that I’d return, and I simply said, 'I come back.’ At that moment, I hadn’t yet delivered the line 'I'll be back' from Terminator, so I said 'I come back,' and the audience erupted in applause. The host then said, 'Thank you very much, Arnold, that was incredible. For your public speaking debut, you did an amazing job and your English was excellent.'”
Reflecting on that moment, he added, “Afterward, I thought to myself, 'Oh my God, I was terrified speaking in front of people, but this was the most supportive audience imaginable.’”
