Director Sejal Shah Reveals Why Nawazuddin Siddiqui is Ideal for ‘Costao’

Mumbai, April 23 (NationPress) Director Sejal Shah expressed her admiration for actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, explaining why he was the ideal candidate for the lead role in her forthcoming film “Costao.”

Renowned for his versatility and emotional depth, Nawazuddin portrays a Goa Customs officer—a character that Sejal believes only he can embody with the necessary authenticity and depth. Discussing the casting decision, Sejal remarked, “Many have observed a remarkable physical and personal similarity between Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the character Costao, but that was not the reason for my choice.”

“From the outset of this film's development, I was certain that Nawaz was the sole actor capable of breathing life into Costao. Unlike a typical hero, this character’s intricate nature and emotional layers require an actor skilled in navigating profound character transitions. While Nawaz’s remarkable talent is irrefutable, it is his gift for infusing every scene with genuine intensity, subtle finesse, and authentic sophistication that distinguishes him. He doesn’t merely portray the character; he becomes Costao, steering clear of any caricature. I have waited years to bring this film to fruition because only Nawaz could provide the performance this role demands,” she added.

In a prior statement, Nawazuddin mentioned that ‘Costao’ is not just about a customs officer confronting a merciless smuggling syndicate—it’s a narrative about the cost of resisting an entire system entrenched in corruption and treachery.

“There’s a line in the movie where the character states, ‘Humare society mein sabko chahiye ki Officer honest ho aur brave ho… lekin Ghar mein Nahi’; it resonates deeply. Costao’s bravery against overwhelming odds embodies this theme perfectly. His struggle is not only against criminals but also against a system that seeks to undermine him at every turn. I am eager for audiences to witness the explosive twists, raw emotion, and relentless intensity that Costao delivers. It’s a tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat, challenging notions of right and wrong, and exploring what one man will sacrifice for justice,” the 'Haddi' actor articulated.

'Costao' also stars Priya Bapat, Kishore Kumar G, Gagan Dev Riar, and Hussain Dalal. Set against the backdrop of tumultuous 1990s Goa, the film is produced by Vinod Bhanushali, Kamlesh Bhanushali, Bhavesh Mandalia, Sejal Shah, Shyam Sunder, and Faizuddin Siddiqui.

'Costao' is slated to premiere on May 1 on ZEE5.
