Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 12 (NationPress) Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur reflected on the significant impact of the beloved television series “Udaan,” emphasizing the necessity for similar value-oriented programming in today’s media landscape.
Taking to X, previously known as Twitter, Shekhar shared an image from the show, which concluded in 1991. He reminisced about how “Udaan” turned into a cultural phenomenon during a time when television was limited to a single channel.
“Here’s a still from the series UDAAN. It emerged when Doordarshan was the sole broadcaster. It became incredibly popular. I could hardly go anywhere without being recognized. In small towns and villages, I was known as ‘Collector Sahib’ because of the character I portrayed... that was the influence of television back then,” he noted.
According to the filmmaker, the show had a profound social influence, especially on women who were motivated to enter civil services.
“The number of women I encounter who hold significant roles in the IAS, Foreign Service, and IPS, inspired by the series to pursue their studies and aim for these positions, continues to astonish me,” he added.
He advocated for a revival of substantial storytelling, stating: “That was the might of television back then... a TV with principles, the kind we need in Bharat once more... we must rediscover that.”
“Udaan” was created and helmed by Kavita Chowdhry, based on the true story of her sister, Kanchan Choudhary Bhattacharya, who made history as India’s first female Director General of Police.
The series narrated the journey of Kalyani Singh, whose father encourages her to strive for a respectable standing in society, as she confronts gender bias and various challenges to achieve her dream of becoming a police officer.
He also recounted an experience while filming “Bandit Queen” in a village in Uttar Pradesh.
“During the shoot in a UP village for Bandit Queen, thousands showed up, and I was taken aback. They told me, ‘We came to see Collector Sahib,’ showcasing the massive popularity of the series,” he concluded.
