Siddharth Bodke on playing Subrata Roy in Scam 2010: 'Wanted to explore the man behind the image'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Siddharth Bodke has opened up about the formidable challenge of portraying the late Sahara Group founder Subrata Roy in director Hansal Mehta's highly anticipated series 'Scam 2010', describing the role as one of the most demanding and rewarding undertakings of his career. The series, set to premiere in January 2027 on Sony LIV, marks the third instalment in the acclaimed 'Scam' franchise.
The Challenge of Embodying Subrata Roy
'What fascinated me most was peeling back the layers of a personality that the world already thought it knew,' Bodke said in remarks ahead of the show's first-look reveal. 'We all know the larger-than-life personality, but I wanted to explore who he really was, what drove him, and why he made the choices he did,' the actor noted.
Bodke added that the immersive process had been transformative beyond the craft itself. 'I have lived with this character for a long time, and the process has taught me so much, not just as an actor but also as a person. Working with Hansal sir has been an incredible learning experience and a lot of fun!' he said.
What Scam 2010 Is About
'Scam 2010' charts the life and controversial business trajectory of Subrata Roy, who founded the Sahara India Pariwar conglomerate in 1978 and built it into one of the country's most sprawling corporate empires. The series is adapted from journalist Tamal Bandyopadhyay's book 'Sahara: The Untold Story', which documented the conglomerate's meteoric rise and its eventual legal unravelling.
Roy came under the scanner of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) over allegations of raising funds through Sahara's financial schemes. He was arrested in 2014 in connection with contempt proceedings relating to non-compliance with court orders. Roy passed away in November 2023.
The series is backed by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment. Sony LIV unveiled its first look on Monday, 3 November 2026.
Hansal Mehta Returns to the Scam Universe
'Scam 2010' marks Hansal Mehta's return to the franchise following the phenomenal success of 'Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story', which dramatised the 1992 Indian stock market scam and the rise and fall of stockbroker Harshad Mehta. That series catapulted actor Pratik Gandhi — who essayed the titular role — from Gujarati cinema to national prominence, establishing him as one of Hindi entertainment's most distinctive performers.
The legacy of 'Scam 1992' sets a high benchmark for the new instalment, and Bodke acknowledged the weight of that expectation. 'The Scam series already has such a strong legacy, and being trusted to take that forward is a huge responsibility. I'm genuinely excited for people to finally see what we have created,' he said.
Why This Series Matters Beyond Entertainment
The Sahara saga is among the most consequential corporate and legal stories in post-liberalisation India. At its peak, Sahara India Pariwar operated across real estate, media, hospitality, and financial services, touching the lives of crores of small investors. The SEBI dispute involved the alleged illegal collection of funds from an estimated 3 crore small investors — making it a story of systemic regulatory failure as much as individual ambition.
By adapting Bandyopadhyay's reporting into a streaming series, the franchise continues its work of translating complex financial narratives into accessible, compelling television. 'Scam 2010' is set to premiere on Sony LIV in January 2027.
