Is Being a Recognizable Face a 'Disadvantage' in Politics? Smriti Irani Discusses with Soha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, September 12, IANS — Bollywood actress and writer Soha Ali Khan has transitioned into the realm of podcasting, launching her own series where she invites various personalities, particularly women from diverse backgrounds, to share their journeys and inspiring stories.
In a recent episode of her podcast, Soha welcomed Smriti Irani, the Union Minister, who engaged in a revealing conversation about her political journey. During this episode, Smriti addressed the challenges of being a recognizable figure in politics and affirmed her dedication through years of grassroots efforts.
Soha posed a thought-provoking question to Smriti regarding whether being a well-known face was an asset or a liability. Smriti candidly responded, “A disadvantage. Because everybody presumed actors treated politics as something they did at the very end of their careers, not something they pursued seriously from the ground up. Most actors are parachuted into politics because of their popularity and then just become Rajya Sabha members.”
She elaborated, “I was not one of those. When I came into active politics in 2003, I started as a youth wing member of the BJP in Maharashtra. My batchmate today is the CM of Maharashtra, and my other colleague, Dharmendra Pradhan, is now the Minister of Education. But even then, I wanted to be in the trenches, working alongside my colleagues and gaining their respect, because I knew I was in it for the long haul.” Smriti detailed her journey, mentioning her rise from grassroots responsibilities to becoming the State Secretary in Maharashtra during Nitin Gadkari's presidency. She has worked under five BJP presidents and ran her first election campaign at the age of 27, stating, “Been there, done that.”
Soha Ali Khan, who launched her podcast journey on YouTube on August 22, has been praised for her warmth, wit, and engaging conversations. Her podcast has previously featured notable personalities like Sunny Leone and Patralekhaa.
