Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's insurer rejected hospitalisation claim over undeclared ulcers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Singer-actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has alleged that her health insurance provider refused to settle her hospitalisation expenses after she was admitted for severe ulcers, sparking a public dispute that has drawn attention to pre-existing condition clauses in Indian health insurance policies. The actress took to X on 16 July to share her ordeal, vowing to 'expose the fraud in their operations.'
What Happened
Krishnamoorthi revealed in a late-night post on X that she had been hospitalised when her ulcers 'threatened to burst,' only to find her insurer unwilling to cover the costs. Writing at 1:45 am, she said: 'Its 1.45 am and i cant sleep bec of severe acidity. I have ulcers. And the last time my ulcers threatened to burst i had to be hospitalized.'
The insurer's stated reason, according to Krishnamoorthi, was that she had not declared her ulcers at the time of taking out the policy. She contested this, arguing she did not have ulcers when the policy was purchased.
The Insurer's Demand and Her Rebuttal
Krishnamoorthi said the company then asked her to produce doctors' certificates confirming she was ulcer-free at the time of policy inception — a demand she described as absurd. In her words: 'Next they will insist on the car number that kills u in advance so ur family can make a claim.'
She added that she is 'so disgusted' by the episode and has moved beyond seeking a refund. 'I no longer care abt the refund — i will expose the fraud in their operations,' she wrote.
Questions Over the Insurer's Medical Assessment
In a separate post, Krishnamoorthi questioned the qualifications of the doctors employed by the insurance company. 'Their conduct so appalling — i would like a legal enquiry on the qualifications of doctors they employ. The one on my case certainly didnt understand how sciene or disease works,' she wrote, preserving her original phrasing.
She did not name the insurer publicly in the posts cited in reports.
Who Is Suchitra Krishnamoorthi
Krishnamoorthi, 50, began her career with the television series Chunauti while still in school. She broke into mainstream cinema with Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and later starred in the Malayalam film Kilukkampetti alongside Jayaram. In the mid- to late 1990s, she released pop albums including Dole Dole, Dum Tara, A-Ha, and Zindagi. She returned to films in 2005 with My Wife's Murder opposite Anil Kapoor, and in 2022 appeared in the critically acclaimed Netflix film Odd Couple alongside Divyendu Sharma.
Wider Context
Krishnamoorthi's case reflects a broader grievance among Indian policyholders over claim rejections tied to pre-existing condition disclosures. Insurers are permitted under current regulations to reject claims if a condition existed prior to policy inception and was not declared — but critics argue the burden of proof placed on claimants can be unreasonable, particularly for conditions that develop after a policy is taken out. Regulatory oversight of health insurance claim disputes in India falls under the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), which has in recent years tightened norms on wrongful rejection. Whether Krishnamoorthi pursues a formal complaint or legal route remains to be seen.
