Actress Sydney Sweeney, who has played Cassie Howard on HBO's Euphoria since the show's premiere in 2019, has broken her silence on years of fan and media speculation about what stalled the long-awaited third season. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Sweeney directly disputed claims that cast scheduling conflicts were to blame for the production gap.

What Sweeney Said About the Delay

'Well, I mean, we all grew up together on this show, so it's honestly crazy to watch how much social media and the press spin things,' Sweeney told the publication. She explained that contractual obligations to HBO made the scheduling narrative impossible. 'I was in first position to HBO. So the moment they say, 'Hey, this is the first day of filming,' I'm legally not allowed to do anything else. So my schedule doesn't affect the show,' she said.

Sweeney added that the same arrangement applied across the board: 'All of us were in first position, so it wasn't like any of our schedules were holding it up.' The real causes, as widely reported, were the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that disrupted Hollywood production timelines in 2023, compounded by script development delays that pushed the originally planned 2024 production start further back.

Cassie's Season 3 Storyline

Sweeney revealed that series creator Sam Levinson had been laying out Cassie's trajectory long before cameras rolled on Season 3. As Season 2 was wrapping, Levinson would call her with ideas for the character's next chapter. 'So I knew years before we started filming season three that I would be married to Nate, we'd be living in a suburban neighborhood, and Cassie would be crazier than ever,' she said.

In Season 3, Cassie finds fame as an OnlyFans creator — a development Sweeney said was consistent with the character's core psychology. 'From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved. She has a need to be validated by other people. She doesn't know how to love herself unless someone else loves her,' Sweeney explained. 'I think she was more excited by the idea of all these people loving her and knowing who she is and feeling like her world isn't small.'

On Nudity, Character Choices, and Craft

Sweeney also addressed conversations she had with Levinson about the nudity the storyline required, drawing a clear line between herself and the role. 'Do I agree with all of Cassie's decisions? Would I personally make these choices? No, of course not,' she said. 'But I'm an actor and that's my job and this is Cassie's life and to be able to do her justice and play her how she's to be played is to bring Sam's vision to life and to play Cassie in the most vulnerable and insane way possible.'

Saying Goodbye to Cassie

Looking back on the series, Sweeney described bidding farewell to the character as bittersweet. 'Every season, like Sam says, he's always shot it like it's the last,' she said. 'And I think we've all approached it in the same mentality. So I've always said goodbye to Cassie on the last day, as bittersweet as it is, because she's such a challenging role and she stretches me as an actor.'

Since Euphoria first aired, Sweeney has parlayed her acclaim into a string of high-profile projects, including The White Lotus, The Housemaid, and Anyone but You. With Season 3 now underway, all eyes are on whether the show can recapture the cultural momentum of its earlier runs.
