Tamil film producers halt releases, shoots from September 1 over OTT row
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association on Saturday, 22 August jointly announced that no new Tamil films will be released from September 1, and that all film shootings and post-production work will be suspended from the same date. The decision is a direct response to what producers have called a unilateral move by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation.
What Triggered the Standoff
The theatre owners and distributors had stipulated that they would screen only those films whose producers furnished a written assurance that their films would not stream on OTT platforms until at least eight weeks after theatrical release. Producers say this condition was imposed without any prior consultation with the filmmaking community.
In a joint statement, the producer bodies said: 'The distributors federation and the theatre owners association, of their own accord and without holding consultations with others, have decided that they can permit the theatrical screenings of only those films, whose producers give letters stating that they will release their films on OTT platforms only after eight weeks after their films' theatrical release.'
Why Producers Are Pushing Back
The associations pointed out that no such mandatory eight-week OTT window exists in neighbouring states — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, or Kerala. They argued that introducing this condition exclusively in Tamil Nadu, without stakeholder dialogue, sets a damaging precedent for the industry.
'When such decisions are made, consultations should have been held with all stakeholders to ensure that no party is affected. Only then should such announcements be made. Therefore, this unilateral decision of the distributors federation and the theatre owners association is unacceptable to producers,' the statement read.
Scale of the Shutdown
The suspension covers not just theatrical releases but the entire production pipeline — active film shoots and post-production work across the Tamil film industry will come to a halt from 1 September 2025. Several films were reportedly scheduled for release in the coming weeks, making the standoff potentially costly for all parties involved.
Hopes for Resolution
The producer associations said they would bring the dispute to the attention of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the minister concerned, seeking government intervention for an amicable resolution. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association Secretary S. Sridhar expressed cautious optimism, saying, 'There are a number of films slotted for release in the coming weeks from September. We will all get together, hold talks and look to find a solution to the issue.'
The outcome of any government-mediated talks is expected to determine whether the shutdown proceeds as announced or is called off before the September deadline.
