Pa Ranjith's 'Vettuvam' with Arya set for Pongal 2027 release
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Director Pa Ranjith's action drama 'Vettuvam', led by actor Arya, is officially set to release during Pongal 2027, the makers announced on 31 October 2026. The filmmaker confirmed the release window on his social media handles, writing: 'The forces of #Vettuvam are set to unleash their madness and mastery. Jan 2027 | #VettuvamFromPongal.'
What the Film Is About
Pa Ranjith had earlier this month described 'Vettuvam' as a story centred on the struggle for power between competing factions. Every actor in the film reportedly underwent dedicated martial arts training to authentically embody their roles — a detail the director highlighted as integral to the film's action-heavy narrative.
The film features a multi-character ensemble: Arya plays Dharmarajan, Shabeer Kallarakkal portrays Sembiyan, Kalai Arasan takes on the role of Veera Varman, and Dinesh plays Nandhan. Actress Sobhita Dhulipala plays a character named Radhi. Music for the film is composed by G V Prakash.
Sobhita Dhulipala's Tamil Debut After Wedding
'Vettuvam' has drawn additional attention as it marks Sobhita Dhulipala's first Tamil-language film since her high-profile wedding. The actress, who rose to national prominence through her OTT work, stepping into Tamil cinema — and specifically into a Pa Ranjith production — has been widely noted by fans and industry observers alike.
The Tragedy on Set
The production of 'Vettuvam' was overshadowed by grief in July last year when stuntman Mohan Raj died while performing a car stunt on the sets in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Pa Ranjith's production house, Neelam Productions, issued a formal statement mourning his loss.
The statement read: 'On the morning of 13th July, we lost unexpectedly a talented stunt artist and a long time colleague Mr. Mohan Raj on the sets of our film 'Vettuvam' in Nagapattinam district of Tamizh Nadu. Our heart is broken for his wife, children, family and all who knew and loved Mohan Raj Anna as a colleague and a friend.'
Neelam Productions noted that the team had followed all protocols under the supervision of stunt director Dilip Subbarayan, and described Mohan Raj as a veteran whose expertise the entire crew relied upon. The production house said: 'He will have our respect, love and adoration always' and added that he would be remembered as 'a fabulous stunt artist.'
What to Expect at Pongal
A Pongal release places 'Vettuvam' squarely in one of Tamil cinema's most competitive slots, historically a battleground for big-ticket action films. With Pa Ranjith's track record of socially charged, visually distinct cinema — and the combination of Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, and G V Prakash's score — the film will be one of the most-watched Tamil releases of early 2027.
