Vidya Malavade makes microdrama debut in 'Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Vidya Malavade is making her microdrama debut with 'Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story', a thriller streaming exclusively on the Story TV app, and she has revealed what finally persuaded her to enter a format she had long avoided. Produced by Small Town Boys and directed by Alok Sharma, the show tackles the growing menace of digital arrest scams — a subject that has rattled thousands of Indian households.
Why Vidya Said Yes to Microdrama
Known for her role in 'Chak De! India', Malavade had consciously kept her distance from microdrama until this project. 'I had stayed away from microdrama all this while. But this story intrigued me, and so did the fact that this format actually gets really close to people. It lives on their phones, in the same place where these scams happen,' she said.
Her character Priya is at the centre of the narrative — an educated, cautious woman who still falls victim to a sophisticated scam. 'What frightened me most while playing Priya was realizing she could be any of us. Our parents. Our neighbours. Priya is educated, she is careful, she does everything right, and she still loses everything in a single afternoon,' Malavade said.
She added a pointed social message: 'Now think about people who aren't as familiar with the digital world. That is what makes this story matter. If it makes even one family pause before that one scam phone call, it has done more than most stories ever get to.'
Pratik Sehajpal as the Antagonist
Bigg Boss 15 runner-up Pratik Sehajpal plays Vicky Mandal, the architect of the scam network. Sehajpal said stepping into the role forced him to confront how industrial and cold digital fraud operations truly are. 'Playing the person behind the crime forced me to understand how cold and organized this world really is. These are not lone tricksters; they are factories built to break your judgment in ninety seconds,' he said.
He added that he wanted audiences to despise the character for a reason that goes beyond drama: 'I wanted people to hate Vicky, because that hatred is what makes you spot the real scammers in your own life.' Sehajpal also noted that the microdrama format itself felt like a creative frontier, describing it as 'the next big thing in entertainment.'
Vineet Raina and the Rest of the Cast
Vineet Raina portrays Raj Thakur, a suspended officer who re-enters the fight against the fraud network. 'Raj is a man who was punished for doing his job right. There are real officers fighting this quietly, and I salute them. This show is not about entertainment that looks away from the truth,' Raina said.
The ensemble also includes Sandeep Aurora as Anand, alongside Priyanshi Tripathi, Puja Jha, Ayushi Tyagi, Shital Tejwani, Ashok K. Jha, and Yogesh Pawar.
The Bigger Picture: Digital Arrest Scams in India
Digital arrest scams — where fraudsters impersonate law-enforcement officials and coerce victims into transferring money — have surged across India, with victims cutting across age and education levels. The story's choice to centre an educated, careful protagonist is deliberate: it undercuts the assumption that awareness alone is a sufficient shield. This comes amid growing calls for public-awareness campaigns and tighter telecom regulation to curb such fraud.
With 'Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story' now streaming on the Story TV app, the show will test whether microdrama can carry a socially resonant story to audiences who need it most.
