Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) Internationally acclaimed comedian Vir Das, known for his standup performances loved worldwide, believes that Indian comedy has yet to achieve a global status. He expresses optimism that as India's cultural footprint expands, so will the reach of its comedy, and he aspires to play a role in that transformation.
When asked if he thinks Indian comedy has made it onto the global stage, Vir stated, “Not even close, not even close. I believe that as India becomes an undeniable global cultural powerhouse, Indian comedy will ascend to incredible heights — and I wish to be a small contributor to that journey.”
With a portfolio that includes about 35 plays, over 100 stand-up shows, 18 films, eight television series, and six comedy specials, Vir humorously portrays his career as “a disaster,” yet he describes success in straightforward terms.
On reflecting about his career, Vir candidly replied, “Quite a disaster, yes.”
What constitutes success for him now, given his global fanbase and numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Award? Vir remarked, “Free biscuits. I think if you show up anywhere in the world and there’s a tray of biscuits waiting for you, that’s success you can hold onto. Some days tickets sell, some days they don’t. But if biscuits are around, you’ll be alright.”
The 46-year-old comedian was honored with the Disruptor Award at the 16th edition of the IFFM.
Does he consider himself a “disruptor”? He responded, “Do I believe I'm a disruptor? I see myself as a product of many people's kindness, and that kindness has been disruptive.”
Starting his journey in standup, Vir transitioned to Hindi cinema featuring in films like Badmaash Company, Delhi Belly, and Go Goa Gone. In 2017, he showcased his talent in the Netflix special Abroad Understanding. In 2019, he made his American television debut with the series Whiskey Cavalier.
