Los Angeles, May 17 (NationPress) Hollywood actor Willem Dafoe is set to collaborate once again with Brazil's Barbara Paz in the upcoming near-future drama titled ‘Cuddle’. This film represents Paz's debut in fiction feature filmmaking.
Previously, Dafoe served as an associate producer for the documentary ‘Babenco: Tell Me When I Die’, directed by Paz as a tribute to her late husband, the Argentine-Brazilian filmmaker Hector Babenco, according to reports from Variety.
This documentary was also Brazil's official submission for the 93rd Academy Awards. Dafoe's connection to both Paz and Babenco dates back to ‘My Hindu Friend’, Babenco's semi-autobiographical film from 2015, where Dafoe portrayed a filmmaker nearing death, significantly inspired by Babenco, while Paz had a small yet crucial role.
In ‘Cuddle’, Dafoe takes on the role of Dante, a professional cuddler who provides platonic comfort to individuals longing for connection in a world where affection is increasingly scarce and transactional.
His clientele includes a spectrum of people, from the overwhelmed to the emotionally fragile, all seeking human contact. Despite his composed facade, Dante grapples with a painkiller addiction and a solitary life, soothed only by the silent companionship of his dog. However, a chance encounter disrupts his routine, paving the way for a delicate and unforeseen kind of intimacy.
Dafoe expressed, “Beyond an exploration of loneliness, the need for human touch and overcoming challenges, this narrative encapsulates the essence of our current era.”
He also conveyed his excitement about reuniting with Paz. Adding to the film's Oscar-worthy credentials, Brazil's Conspiracao, the team behind the recent Best International Feature Oscar winner ‘I’m Still Here’, collaborates with Infinity Hill, producers of the Academy Award-nominated ‘Argentina, 1985’, as co-producers alongside Paz’s own company, BP.
‘Cuddle’ marks the inaugural collaboration between Infinity Hill and Conspiracao, yet it stands as their second co-production with Brazil.
