Renowned filmmaker Yash Chopra once elaborated on how the melodies of this legendary composer became integral to the movie’s atmosphere.
A recently resurfaced video online captures Yash Chopra in a conversation with Bollywood's versatile figure Karan Johar. In this discussion, he revealed how fate intervened to bring the music of the late composer into the project.
Chopra remarked, “I was exploring a lot of contemporary music but found myself dissatisfied. One day, while chatting with Sanjeev, Madan Mohan's son and also the CEO of my company, I expressed my frustration over the music I was hearing. Sanjeev then told me, ‘It’s not just about selling Madan Mohan’s music; I have countless melodies from him in his own voice. If you’re interested, you and Adi can listen to them and choose about 30 pieces. We can record these with temporary lyrics and musicians.’”
He continued, “Through this process, I discovered how music fits into modern storytelling. I selected around 12 melodies from the collection. We typically work by presenting the situation to the music director, who crafts the tunes. However, in this case, I had the situations and the melodies but not the composer to alter them. So, I matched the tunes with the scenes accordingly. Then, I approached Javed Akhtar for lyrics, and he crafted exquisite poetry.”
