Ahmedabad, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC-ITS) at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has made remarkable strides by achieving 500 kidney transplants within a single year, thereby establishing a new national record in the public health sector.

This landmark achievement in 2025 has positioned IKDRC-ITS as the sole public hospital in India to perform 500 kidney transplants in one year, solidifying its status as the nation's foremost government-operated kidney transplant center.

Functioning under the auspices of the Gujarat government's Health Department, the institute has become a vital source of hope for economically disadvantaged patients while remaining at the cutting edge of medical technology. This milestone has propelled IKDRC to the top rank among public hospitals in India for kidney transplantation.

As per official statistics, the institute had conducted approximately 400 transplants by November 2024. In 2025 alone, the figures reached 400 by October 7, ultimately soaring to 500 by year-end—an extraordinary record in public healthcare. Among the 500 transplant recipients, 367 were men, and 133 were women.

Importantly, the institute's services extended beyond the boundaries of Gujarat, with 330 patients from the state and 170 from various other regions of the country benefiting from its services. IKDRC has also made significant advancements in specialized and technology-driven transplant procedures.

The tally for 2025 includes 157 cadaver transplants, 90 swap transplants, 49 pediatric transplants, and 43 robotic kidney transplants. These intricate procedures were successfully conducted through a blend of modern methodologies and the expertise of highly trained medical professionals.

The institute has been pivotal in providing affordable healthcare to the most vulnerable segments of society.

A total of 318 transplants were performed under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) scheme. Furthermore, transplants were executed under the School Health Programme (29), for SC beneficiaries (24), ST beneficiaries (7), CAPF personnel (4), and CGHS beneficiaries (5), ensuring equitable access to life-saving treatments.

A key element in IKDRC's success is its 24/7 service model. The institute remains operational around the clock, even during major festivals like Diwali.

With the continuous support and guidance from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat government's Health Department, the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre has firmly established itself as one of India’s leading public hospitals—showcasing an exemplary model of excellence in healthcare and humanitarian service.
