Will Shreyas Iyer Secure CoE Clearance as India Unveils Gill-Led Squad for ODIs Against New Zealand?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, with Shubman Gill at the helm. Shreyas Iyer, who has been recovering from an injury, is part of the squad, yet his availability hinges on fitness approval from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Additionally, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who recently dazzled with a century for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Vidarbha, has been rested to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup.
“Shreyas Iyer’s participation is contingent upon fitness clearance from the BCCI COE. Hardik Pandya has not received clearance to bowl 10 overs in a match, and in light of the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, his workload is being carefully managed,” stated the BCCI in their announcement.
Iyer is scheduled to arrive in Jaipur on Sunday and will take part in Mumbai's next two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. After completing the final phase of his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, he has received clearance to return to competitive play, intending to participate in Mumbai’s last two league games against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on January 6 and 8, respectively.
Another significant omission is pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, who will only feature in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, followed by the T20 World Cup. In Bumrah's absence, the pace attack will be spearheaded by Siraj, with Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna as additional options.
Despite impressive and consistent displays in domestic cricket, Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel were not selected for the New Zealand series.
Notably, stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma maintain their spots in the squad and aim to extend their remarkable form in the 50-over format. The duo recently showcased their skills in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring magnificent centuries and half-centuries, thereby reinforcing their selection.
