Hyderabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) A potential bird flu outbreak in the Wanaparthy district of Telangana has led to the deaths of a significant number of chickens at a farm over the past three days, prompting local authorities to issue an alert.
Samples have been collected from the affected farm and dispatched to a laboratory to verify if it is the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which has recently impacted several districts in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
The fatalities included 2,500 chickens from a farm located in Konnur within the Madanapuram mandal, according to K. Venkateshwar, the District Veterinary and Animal Husbandry officer of Wanaparthy district.
Officials noted that the unexplained illness was discovered at the Premium Poultry Farm, raising alarm among other farm owners.
As per the official report, 117 chickens perished on February 16, followed by 300 on February 17, and the remaining birds on February 18.
Local authorities promptly initiated an investigation and implemented surveillance measures to contain the spread of the disease.
Inspectors from the District Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department evaluated the site and collected samples, which were sent for laboratory analysis.
It remains unconfirmed whether the chickens succumbed to bird flu or an alternative disease. "A definitive conclusion will be reached once we receive the laboratory report. In the meantime, we are taking all necessary precautions to prevent further spread," stated an official.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation at the affected farm and surrounding farms.
Farmers have been advised to stay alert and report any unusual symptoms or poultry fatalities without delay.
The recent chicken deaths in Telangana coincided with a bird flu outbreak that has already caused the deaths of thousands in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
Over 100,000 chickens were culled in the affected districts of Andhra Pradesh, where strict containment measures, including the establishment of red and surveillance zones, were implemented to control the further spread of HPAI.
In response to the bird flu crisis in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana authorities halted the import of chickens from the neighboring state.
The poultry industry in both Telugu states has been severely impacted by this disease.
