Hyderabad, July 10 (NationPress) In a troubling turn of events, six additional individuals have been hospitalized after consuming adulterated toddy, bringing the total number of hospitalized patients to 37. Alarmingly, the condition of four individuals remains critical.
These six new patients arrived at hospitals exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
Since Wednesday morning, this unfortunate incident has resulted in five fatalities, all of whom were residents of Kukatpally.
As reported by officials, 31 patients are receiving care at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), with four in critical condition requiring dialysis. Fortunately, the remaining patients are reported to be stable.
Among the deceased, identified as Sita Ram, Swarupa, Mounika, Narayana, and Bojjaya, succumbed while under medical care at various hospitals.
The Prohibition and Excise Department has launched an investigation into this tragic incident, filing five cases against toddy shops located in Hyderanagar, Shamshiguda, and KPHB Colony. Authorities have sealed the establishments and confiscated 674 litres of toddy, while also sending samples for chemical analysis.
In a decisive move, the Excise department has closed the implicated shops and arrested five suspects: Nagesh Goud, Batti Srinivas Goud, T. Srinivas Goud, K. Kumar Goud, and Teegala Ramesh.
To ensure prompt attention to similar cases, personnel have been stationed at key hospitals in Kukatpally to monitor incoming patients.
Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao visited NIMS on Wednesday, reaching out to the affected individuals and consulting with doctors regarding their treatment. He emphasized the need for stringent measures against those responsible for the adulteration of toddy to prevent future occurrences.
Additionally, BJP MP Eatala Rajender visited NIMS to support the affected and called for a thorough investigation, urging the government to regulate toddy shops more effectively.
