Hyderabad, July 9 (NationPress) Tragically, one individual lost their life and 17 others fell ill after consuming contaminated toddy in the Kukatpally region of Hyderabad.
The deceased, Sita Ram (47), succumbed while receiving treatment at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday. Originally from Wanaparthy district, he had been living in Hydernagar.
The individuals affected, which included four women, were rushed to three different hospitals overnight, with one person's condition being reported as critical.
Authorities indicated that 15 patients were taken to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), two to Gandhi Hospital, and one to Prathima Hospital.
These individuals are thought to have consumed adulterated toddy at various establishments in Hydernagar between Sunday and Tuesday. Symptoms manifested as low blood sugar, dizziness, and diarrhea, leading to initial treatment at private hospitals.
Upon receiving reports, police and the Prohibition and Excise Department transferred 12 individuals to NIMS on Tuesday, with the total number of affected increasing to 18 by late Tuesday night. A 78-year-old man remains in critical condition.
Officials from the Prohibition and Excise Department have initiated legal proceedings against four toddy shops in Hyderanagar, Shamshiguda, and KPHB Colony. The shops have been sealed, and samples of the contaminated toddy have been sent for laboratory analysis. Two suspects have been detained for further questioning.
The Excise Department is monitoring private hospitals in Kukatpally and nearby areas for additional patients exhibiting similar symptoms.
Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao visited NIMS Hospital on Wednesday to check on the affected individuals and consulted with doctors regarding their health status.
