Is IIT Roorkee Leading the Way in Mental Health Initiatives?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Uttarakhand, Feb 15 (NationPress) - In a significant move aimed at enhancing student well-being within higher education, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has initiated the creation of a thorough mental health policy for its campus community. This initiative is being recognized as a groundbreaking step that may serve as an example for other IITs nationwide.
The initial draft of this policy was crafted by the institute's Wellness Centre, which functions as a mental health care hub for students, faculty, and staff.
This draft was developed with contributions from the Dean of Student Welfare, the Associate Dean of Student Wellness, clinical psychologists at IIT Roorkee, external consultants, and faculty members. This collaborative effort ensures that the framework is informed by both professional knowledge and institutional insights.
The initiative gained momentum during “SAHYOG 2.0”, a targeted inter-IIT dialogue focused on exchanging ideas and learning from the experiences of other IITs.
The aim was to explore existing policies, protocols, and governance systems at various IITs, integrating best practices into a comprehensive and inclusive mental health framework for the entire IIT community.
SAHYOG 2.0 builds upon the achievements of SAHYOG 1.0, conducted in 2024. This latest gathering also aligns with the recent directives from the Supreme Court of India and the University Grants Commission (UGC), emphasizing the significance of mental health governance in higher education institutions.
The discussions during SAHYOG 2.0 encompassed a variety of topics, including how institutions can formulate and execute mental health policies, the necessity for preventive and responsive support systems, and the roles of Wellness Centres, counselling cells, and student welfare organizations.
Participants also deliberated on standardizing mental health policies across IITs and establishing clear standard operating procedures for managing crisis situations.
The event brought together representatives from all IITs, including Deans, faculty members, and mental health experts.
Notable external advisors from institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh, Government Medical College and Hospital Chandigarh, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, King George's Medical University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Institute of Psychiatry Kolkata, O P Jindal Global University, Mariwala Health Initiative, University of Delhi, and the Uttarakhand Police Special Investigation Force also participated.
Among the distinguished attendees were a Supreme Court advocate and an anthropologist.
Commenting on this initiative, IIT Roorkee Director Prof K.K. Pant stated that mental health and well-being have emerged as vital cornerstones of excellence in higher education. He noted that initiatives like SAHYOG 2.0 reflect a collective acknowledgment of this responsibility among educational institutions.
