The Deaths That Sparked the Protest

Reena Devi and her newborn reportedly died on 17 July following what BJP leaders and local residents allege were serious lapses in care at the government-run district hospital. The incident drew immediate public outrage, with angry residents vandalising parts of the hospital facility and staging a road blockade in the days that followed.

The hospital administration subsequently filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR against eight persons. Those named include BJP district President Sumit Sharan, district General Secretary Kamlesh Mandal, BJP Yuva Morcha district chief Kunal Singh, town president Pradeep Rawat, and several unidentified individuals.

Marandi Leads Rally, Calls Action 'Authoritarian'

Marandi, who led BJP workers in the march, described the FIR against party members as 'authoritarian' and accused the Jharkhand government of failing to address public grievances while prioritising its own interests. He alleged that the state's healthcare system is in a poor condition and specifically questioned the state of government ambulance services.

Marandi also alleged irregularities in the tendering process, claiming commissions were being extracted and benefits extended to individuals with government connections. He further accused the administration of ignoring illegal mining activities and irregularities in the sand, iron ore, and coal sectors — pointing out that despite Jharkhand's abundant mineral wealth, ordinary residents were not seeing commensurate benefits.

Other BJP Leaders Raise Wider Concerns

Several other senior BJP figures joined the protest and broadened the scope of criticism. Former MP Sunil Soren accused the district administration of acting in a partisan manner and called on officials to function impartially. Former minister Randhir Singh questioned the overall state of healthcare services and alleged that the district administration was operating under political pressure.

Former MLA Sita Soren, who had contested the Jamtara Assembly seat as a BJP candidate, termed the government's six-and-a-half-year tenure a failure, raising concerns over healthcare, employment, and education. She also alleged that young people raising legitimate demands were being targeted with criminal cases.

Broader Governance Allegations

Beyond the immediate hospital deaths, BJP leaders used the rally to press the government on a range of issues including recruitment examinations, employment generation, road infrastructure, law and order, and alleged corruption. This comes amid a pattern of opposition-led protests in Jharkhand over public service delivery, with healthcare emerging as a recurring point of contention.
