Ranchi, Jan 19 (NationPress) The Jharkhand High Court has voiced its strong dissatisfaction regarding the inadequate arrangements for the disposal of biomedical waste at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), the largest medical college and healthcare facility in Ranchi.
During the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) brought forth by the Jharkhand Human Rights Confederation, a Division Bench consisting of Chief Justice M.S. Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar indicated their frustration over the response provided by RIMS officials.
The Bench noted that RIMS has not adhered to previous court directives concerning the scientific and legal disposal of biomedical waste, despite multiple reminders.
The court mandated the RIMS Director to submit a comprehensive affidavit detailing the actions taken thus far to finalize the tender process for managing biomedical waste disposal.
This case is scheduled for further consideration on February 2.
During proceedings, the petitioner informed the court that the new tender for biomedical waste disposal at RIMS remains unfinalized. In response, RIMS confirmed that the tender process is ongoing, and a new tender has been issued, inviting bids from qualified agencies.
RIMS also mentioned plans to establish an all-encompassing waste management system to address biomedical waste, solid waste, and dry waste within the hospital.
Previously, the High Court had expressed serious concerns about the indiscriminate waste disposal within the RIMS campus and requested a detailed report on the current waste management practices.
The PIL emphasized the urgent need for rigorous enforcement of the Biomedical Waste Management Rules stipulated under the Environment (Protection) Act, highlighting the necessity for proper handling and disposal of biomedical waste generated by hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes throughout Jharkhand.
The petition points out that the failure to implement the Biomedical Waste Management and Handling Rules presents a significant threat to public health and the environment, necessitating immediate corrective actions by state authorities.
