Jammu, Dec 29 (NationPress) Following a proposal from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu to the Union Home Ministry (MHA), the ministry has officially sanctioned the establishment of a cutting-edge forensic institute in Jammu and Kashmir.
An announcement today highlighted that the MHA has given the thumbs up to AIIMS Jammu's initiative to set up a state-of-the-art Forensic Institute in J&K.
The aim of the proposed institute is to streamline evidence collection, enhance conviction rates, and improve investigative and diagnostic capabilities in the health sector, as stated by officials.
“A forensic institute is indeed on its way to J&K. AIIMS has put forth a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs, which has been approved,” said Prof Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Jammu.
He noted that the CBI is also engaged in the process. “There are only a limited number of forensic institutes across the nation. This one will be located in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
Gupta further mentioned that AIIMS will collaborate with the institute in the future to facilitate prompt investigations and medical diagnoses.
For the past 35 years, Jammu and Kashmir has faced challenges related to terrorism and currently operates two forensic science labs in Jammu and Srinagar, with the headquarters situated in Jammu.
The forensic lab was established in 1964 under the Home Department. Given Jammu and Kashmir's geographic location, bordering three states and the International Border, it remains vulnerable to threats like terror, narcotics, and gun-related offenses, officials noted.
“The involvement of criminals from various states and nations is always a potential risk. This presents significant challenges for law enforcement and defense forces,” explained Dr Dinesh Rao, Professor and Head of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at AIIMS.
He emphasized the importance of preparing J&K to tackle these challenges by creating a cutting-edge forensic institute that would consolidate all requisite services under one roof.
“This facility will serve as a single-point resource for investigative agencies, aiding in the secure examination and analysis of evidence through various scientific labs,” he noted.
Dr Rao concluded that with governmental support, AIIMS can successfully establish a modern forensic institute to meet the needs of law enforcement and defense forces in combating regional threats.
