New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) The prominent TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan has identified 26.43 lakh cases of tuberculosis from December 2024 to 2025, as stated by Union Health Minister JP Nadda in Parliament on Friday.
The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (National TB Elimination Programme) operates under the auspices of the National Health Mission (NHM) across all states in the nation.
“During the Abhiyan (from December 7, 2024, to December 9, 2025), a total of 26.43 lakh TB cases were detected through screening populations at risk, comprising 9.19 lakh asymptomatic cases that have been initiated on treatment,” Nadda declared in the Lok Sabha.
Referencing the World Health Organization’s Global TB Report 2025, he highlighted a decline in both incidence and mortality rates of this grave infectious disease in the country.
According to the WHO report, the incidence of TB in India has decreased by 21 percent, from 237 per lakh in 2015 to 187 per lakh in 2024.
The death rate due to TB has fallen by 25 percent, from 28 per lakh in 2015 to 21 per lakh in 2024, while TB treatment coverage in India has risen from 53 percent in 2015 to 92 percent in 2024.
Initiated in 2022, the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan employs essential strategies, such as the identification of high-risk populations, including asymptomatic cases, screening via Chest X-ray for early identification, upfront Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) for all presumptive TB cases, prompt initiation and completion of treatment, tailored TB care for high-risk cases, nutritional support, and preventive treatment for the eligible vulnerable populations.
In the previous week, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, informed Parliament that a total of 4.5 crore individuals were tested for tuberculosis in 2025, resulting in over 22.6 lakh new cases being identified.
“From January to October 2025, 4.5 crore individuals underwent TB testing, leading to the discovery of 22,64,704 new TB cases,” Patel stated in a written response in the Rajya Sabha.
