Seoul, April 18 (NationPress) South Korea's Acting President Han Duck-soo organized a luncheon on Friday to express gratitude to police officers who played a crucial role in ensuring public safety during the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. The event took place at Han's official residence and was graced by Lee Ho-young, the acting chief of the National Police Agency, Park Hyun-soo, the acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and various police personnel who worked diligently to prevent violent confrontations between supporters and opponents of Yoon in the lead-up to the Constitutional Court's ruling on impeachment on April 4, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Han remarked, "Our police officers executed their responsibilities impeccably during an exceptionally sensitive and pivotal period for our nation." He added, "I encourage you to remain steadfast alongside the people and fulfill your duties as officers dedicated to establishing a secure Republic of Korea."

In another development, the leader of the South Korean Army's 707th Special Mission Group and six additional military officials have been placed on mandatory leave due to their alleged roles in the martial law imposition on December 3, as stated by the defense ministry on Friday.

The seven officers include Col Kim Hyun-tae, head of the Army's 707th Special Mission Group; Brig Gen Lee Sang-hyun, commander of the 1st Special Forces Brigade; and Major Gen Park Heon-su, head of the ministry's criminal investigation command, according to the ministry.

All seven have been indicted for their involvement in the failed martial law attempt. Park has since been relieved of his duties while the others have been dismissed from their positions.

This latest decision allows the affected officers to remain as servicemen, which could facilitate the military's ability to impose disciplinary actions should they be found guilty in court.

Previously, the ministry had placed key commanders, including former martial law commander Park An-su, on compulsory leave following their indictment related to the unsuccessful martial law effort.
