Phnom Penh, Sep 18 (NationPress) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) revealed on Thursday its approval of a loan amounting to 52.72 million U.S. dollars dedicated to the Grid Expansion Project in Cambodia.
The initiative aims to fortify the country’s transmission network, allowing for greater integration of renewable energy into the national grid and addressing the increasing demand for electricity through cleaner, locally produced power, as stated in an ADB news release.
As reported, Cambodia has rapidly scaled up its electricity generation, doubling its output from 8.68 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2020 to 17.85 TWh by 2024. During this timeframe, the dependency on imported electricity has decreased from 3.06 TWh to 1.57 TWh, according to Xinhua news agency.
“This advancement highlights the country’s growing energy independence and the role renewable resources play in achieving its development objectives,” the news release indicated.
ADB’s country director for Cambodia, Jyotsana Varma, emphasized that reliable and affordable electricity serves as the backbone of Cambodia's growth narrative.
“This initiative extends beyond merely constructing transmission lines—it connects individuals, schools, hospitals, and businesses to a more sustainable and resilient energy future,” she stated.
“By integrating more renewable energy into the grid, Cambodia can create opportunities for its citizens while safeguarding the environment for future generations,” Varma further noted.
With Cambodia's grid originally designed for traditional power sources, it now requires expansion to accommodate the increasing use of solar and wind energy.
The project includes the construction of 55 kilometers of 230-kilovolt transmission lines between Pursat and Kampong Chhnang provinces, alongside the upgrading of nine substations nationwide, as mentioned in the release.
In alignment with Cambodia’s Power Development Master Plan (2022-2040) and the National Energy Efficiency Policy (2022-2030), this project will contribute to reducing transmission losses and enhancing energy security.
