Ottawa, Jan 7 (NationPress) An influential global advocacy organization has expressed serious alarm regarding the increase in extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh under the leadership of the Muhammad Yunus interim government.
According to multiple media sources, the Canada-based Global Centre for Democratic Governance (GCDG) reported that a minimum of 85 people have fallen victim to extrajudicial executions since September 8, 2024. Human rights analysts suggest that the true figure may be much higher.
The group contends that as the unelected Yunus administration continues to prolong its rule, incidents of extrajudicial killings have escalated in the nation.
“With the government exerting near-total control over media outlets, many of these incidents remain underreported or completely unreported. Journalists who attempt to investigate or publish such matters face severe repercussions, including arrests, job terminations, revocation of press credentials, and violent assaults on their workplaces. Some stories are later deleted due to external pressures that aim to erase the truth, enforced by a climate of fear,” the GCDG remarked.
The organization claimed that the Yunus-led interim government, which has never been elected, operates without accountability to the populace, disregarding serious claims regarding extrajudicial killings throughout Bangladesh.
“Every case of extrajudicial killing must undergo an unbiased investigation. Those accountable, irrespective of their position, must be brought to justice. The culture of impunity must be eradicated,” the statement continued.
The GCDG urgently urged both national and international human rights groups, along with global institutions dedicated to justice, to initiate independent investigations into these extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh and ensure that offenders are held accountable. The organization emphasized that silence equals complicity, stating that the world must take action now.
Back in December 2025, a prominent human rights organization in Bangladesh shed light on rampant rights violations nationwide, including mob violence, extrajudicial killings, fatalities in custody, persecution of minorities, deaths due to political violence, and suppression of press freedom.
In its recent report, the Dhaka-based Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) indicated that mob terrorism surged alarmingly throughout 2025.
According to their findings, mob violence resulted in 197 deaths from January to December, compared to 128 the previous year.
Since the Yunus-led interim government took power in 2024, the report noted that at least 293 individuals have died due to mob violence.
Bangladesh is currently facing rising human rights abuses and ongoing attacks on minorities, particularly targeting the Hindu community, under the leadership of the Yunus-led interim government.
