Zaranj, Feb 21 (NationPress) Authorities in Afghanistan have seized over 50 kg of illegal narcotics and arrested two suspected smugglers in the Nimroz province of western Afghanistan, according to Mawlawi Faiz Mohammad Faizani, the head of the provincial counter-narcotics department, on Friday.
As reported, police found the substantial amount of illicit drugs along the Zaranj-Delaram highway and detained two individuals linked to the drug trade, as stated by the Xinhua news agency.
The official emphasized that law enforcement will not permit any production or trafficking of hashish, poppy, or substances used in heroin manufacturing within the province.
The interim Afghan government has imposed a ban on poppy cultivation, drug processing, and trafficking, committing to eradicate the drug problem until the country, previously known for its poppy production, is entirely drug-free.
Earlier in January 2025, the counter-narcotics department authorities destroyed 10.5 tonnes of illegal drugs in Bamiyan province, as reported by the provincial police office.
This contraband included opium poppy, hashish, and other toxic substances, which were publicly incinerated, according to the statement.
Bamiyan police have also prohibited the cultivation of poppy, drug processing, and trafficking in the area.
On January 14, authorities uncovered 43 kg of illegal drugs in Khost province and apprehended one suspect for drug trafficking, revealed provincial police spokesperson Tahir Ehrar.
The seized drugs included 43 kg of hashish along with an AK-47, discovered near the provincial capital, Khost city. The spokesperson noted that one drug smuggler was arrested during this operation.
Law enforcement reiterated their stance against the production and trafficking of hashish, poppy, or heroin-making materials in the province, as stated by Ehrar.
Furthermore, the counter-narcotics police recently confiscated 64 kg of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, and arrested 17 suspected smugglers across two provinces in Afghanistan, as reported by the Ministry of Interior earlier this month.
