Cairo, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, has issued a strong denunciation of the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory.

In a statement released by the AL on Wednesday, Aboul-Gheit characterized the Israeli actions as "reckless provocations and escalations that have taken advantage of Syria's political transition to create an illegal and illegitimate reality."

He urged the international community to take definitive stances against this unjustified aggression, which aims to fuel tensions in the region and obstruct Syria's political transition.

Aboul-Gheit emphasized that any form of Israeli occupation of Syrian land is a blatant violation of international law, calling for increased global condemnation, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

He reiterated the Arab League's commitment to stand with Syria against Israeli incursions and "obvious attempts to instigate discord."

Since the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar Assad, Israel has frequently conducted airstrikes against military targets in Syria. Israeli forces have also extended their presence into southern Syria, near the Golan Heights, indicating plans to remain indefinitely due to security concerns.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that Israel would not permit Syria's new military forces to "enter the area south of Damascus."

While there has been no formal response from the Syrian interim government, which is composed of former insurgents from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Syrian officials have urged Israel to withdraw from the territories it has occupied since Assad's downfall.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz acknowledged the strikes on Syrian soil, warning that any attempt by Syrian regime forces to establish a presence in the southern security zone would be met with force.

Israeli airstrikes intensified on Tuesday night, targeting various military sites in southern Syria following Netanyahu's recent call for the "complete demilitarization of southern Syria."

The Syrian interim government condemned these strikes as a clear violation of Syria's sovereignty.

After the collapse of the Assad regime in December, Israel has further intensified its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, a move that breaches the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.

Additionally, Israel has escalated air strikes against Syrian military positions across the nation.

Israel’s recent military actions in the Golan Heights, which it has controlled since 1967, have drawn widespread condemnation from the United Nations and numerous Arab countries.
