Australia Gears Up for Severe Bushfire Threat

Sydney, Dec 24 (NationPress) Communities and fire crews across Australia were on Tuesday getting ready for several days of severe bushfire threats.
Multiple uncontrolled fires have persisted in the southeastern state of Victoria on Tuesday, even with more favorable conditions for firefighters.
With temperatures predicted to soar beyond 30 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, Christmas Day, and reach 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, residents of Victoria have been warned to prepare for catastrophic fire conditions.
Individuals from areas that were evacuated over the weekend due to the imminent danger from a significant fire in the Grampians National Park, approximately 230 km west of Melbourne, were permitted to return to their residences for two hours on Tuesday morning to retrieve their belongings.
Officials have indicated that they anticipate the fire, which has already scorched over 41,000 hectares of land in the national park over the past eight days, to persist for several weeks.
Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent stated that the projected conditions would pose considerable challenges.
"These conditions will facilitate the ignition and spread of fires, allowing existing blazes to rapidly advance in the direction of the wind," he remarked on Tuesday.
Four interstate firefighting task forces and two emergency management units are expected to arrive in Victoria on Thursday to support the hundreds of local firefighters combating the Grampians blaze.
Nugent emphasized that the additional resources would be vital as the fire risk surges after light rainfall on Sunday and Monday provided minimal relief, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
He noted that authorities are continuing to conduct controlled backburning operations on Tuesday to reduce fuel loads in the national park and protect adjacent towns.
The Country Fire Authority has urged anyone who can avoid traveling through affected regions during the Christmas period to do so.
In other parts of Australia, several minor bush and grass fires in the state of New South Wales continue to burn but remain under control.
In South Australia, residents of the outer-southern Adelaide suburb of Onkaparinga Hills were advised to evacuate on Monday evening as firefighters battled a rampant bushfire. The emergency alert was downgraded on Monday night.
