Why is the Awami League Condemning Targeted Killings of Party Activists?

Dhaka, June 10 (NationPress) The Awami League has issued a strong denunciation regarding the targeted killings of its party members in various prisons throughout Bangladesh, occurring under the interim regime led by Muhammad Yunus.

"A troubling pattern of unexplained deaths and harsh treatment of Bangladesh Awami League members in numerous correctional facilities has ignited widespread anger and concern. Analysts and human rights organizations believe these incidents are not random but rather a part of a meticulously orchestrated, secretive initiative directed by a Yunus-associated covert authority. This operation seeks to dismantle the foundation of pro-liberation politics through intimidation, torture, and extermination," stated the Awami League in an official release.

The party's statement also reported that eyewitnesses and leaked documentation have validated claims of medical negligence and denial of necessary care leading to intentional deaths, forced poisonings, or chemically induced cardiac arrest, alongside solitary confinement and physical abuse specifically targeting Awami League members, all framed as part of administrative procedures.

"These occurrences indicate a hidden agenda aimed at undermining the grassroots support of the party that played a crucial role in the nation’s liberation. This silent purge appears to be a significant aspect of the 'Yunus Doctrine' -- a plan against democracy dressed in the rhetoric of 'neutral governance' and 'technocratic reform,'" the statement continued.

In addition, the Awami League drew attention to the recent jail execution of its leader, Ali Azgar, on Monday.

"The assassination of Ali Azgar reveals the savagery of the Yunus regime. Prisons have transformed into execution sites under this illegitimate government, where Awami League leaders are being systematically eradicated," the statement asserted.

Last month, the party disclosed that at least 21 Awami League members have died in custody since Yunus assumed power.

"These killings, reportedly occurring within jails and police custody -- settings that should be among the safest in any civilized society -- represent a severe breach of both national laws and international human rights principles," the statement emphasized.

The Awami League has called for immediate national responses and judicial inquiry commissions to investigate all prison-related fatalities.

The party has further demanded independent investigation teams under the supervision of the Prime Minister's Office, along with international human rights observers to oversee detentions and identify and eliminate Yunus-aligned collaborators from critical state positions.

According to the Awami League, the primary objective of the Yunus administration is to instill fear to thwart any forthcoming electoral opposition and facilitate the resurgence of anti-liberation, extremist factions.

"This is not merely political oppression. It is an attack on the very essence of the Liberation War. In these bleak times, there is only one leader under whom the people of Bangladesh feel secure -- Sheikh Hasina. As the daughter of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she possesses the moral and political authority necessary to dismantle these conspiracies and restore justice," the Awami League stated.

The party affirmed that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has never capitulated to foreign pressures, extremist threats, or internal treachery. Under her leadership, war criminals have been prosecuted, networks of terror dismantled, and significant development achieved amid political stability.

"Once again, the nation turns to Sheikh Hasina for justice -- to guarantee that no Awami League member suffers in silence and that the perpetrators of these atrocious acts face the fullest legal consequences. Only under Sheikh Hasina's guidance will these hidden assassins be unveiled," the party concluded.
